Treatment and Diet for Fibroids
Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that develop within the smooth muscular tissue of the uterus and can grow in different locations and shapes within the uterus, such as inside the uterine cavity, within the uterine musculature, on the outer walls of the uterus, or attach to the uterus in a mushroom-like stalk. While some women may not experience any symptoms, others may experience severe symptoms such as heavy and prolonged menstrual periods, bleeding in between periods, abdominal and lower back pain, frequent urination, constipation, and, in rare cases, miscarriage and infertility.
Fibroids can affect up to 75% of women at some point in their lives, with women in their 30s and 40s being the most affected. While some fibroids are small and cause minimal to no symptoms, others can grow to a large size and multiply in number, causing a woman’s abdomen to become enlarged or distorted. A particularly large fibroid can cause the uterus to expand to the size of a six- or seven-month pregnancy. Diagnostic testing procedures such as ultrasonography or MRI can confirm the presence of fibroids. A routine pelvic exam can also initially detect the presence of fibroids. Women need to be aware of the symptoms of uterine fibroids and seek medical attention if they experience any of these symptoms.
